Have you heard of the Unearthed festival in Wales, which celebrates emerging and established talent across a range of genres? Festivals are special because they bring people together to celebrate and participate in cultural traditions. They create a sense of community, and provide opportunities for people to have fun and enjoy themselves. Festivals often involve music, food, and other forms of entertainment. What Is The Unearthed Festival?

The Unearthed Festival is an annual music and arts festival that takes place in the heart of the Welsh countryside. The festival showcases emerging and established talent across a range of genres. These include folk and acoustic to electronic and dance music. In addition to the music, the festival also features a variety of arts and cultural activities. These include workshops, talks, and exhibitions. 

The festival is known for its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. It has a focus on reducing waste and promoting eco-friendly practices. Camping is available on site, and the festival is family-friendly, with activities and entertainment for all ages. 

In addition to music, the festival also includes a variety of other arts and cultural activities. These may include workshops on topics such as painting, sculpture, and photograph. As well as exhibits of works by local artists.

Taking place in St Davids, Wales, the festival is set against some of the country’s most breath-taking scenery. It features everything from reggae to sea shanties, comedy to cacao ceremonies and psychedelic session orchestras to family folk duos.

This festival usually runs from the 6th – 18th June 2023, so hopefully you have just been to this festival.

So, who graced the stage this year at the Unearthed festival? But first, what are the stages that you can see your favorite acts perform on?

STEPPEN ROOTS (MAIN STAGE)

Steppen Roots is the original and mighty main stage of Unearthed. Musically focused on a multi genre lineup. From global legends to soon-to-be big up and coming acts, the performances are chosen not based on YouYube views. They ask does their music fit the vibe and is it consciously uplifting in some way?

THE HENGE (CENTRE OF THE MAIN ARENA)

In and around the wooden henge there were open and closing ceremonies. As well as a variety of daily workshops from circus activities, aerial hoop workshops, didgeridoo workshops and more.

DUB CORNER

Dub Corner micro-venue (and cafe) has become an iconic destination for dedicated fans of Dub, Roots, and DnB music at Unearthed festival – 2023 will be no different!

The Unearthed SoundSystem powered micro venue which is nestled at the heart of the Festival site was established in 2021. 

SPEAKEASY

You can experience 3 days of comedy, theatre and inspirational talks! If you are a fan of theatre, then you wet your whistle seeing the beloved MSG cabaret, National Theatre Wales Team. 

COMIC CWTSH

Comic Cwtsh will guide you through an inspirational journey of joy and rumbustious

tranquillity to engage with the colourful bouncy squish of psychedelic vibes with no need for navigating your brainspace into the cosmos. 

Unearthed Festival 2023 Artists

Psychedelic ravers Henge took to the mainstage for a genre-defying mashup of rock, punk, techno and electro on the night of Friday 16, as well as Mad Professor making his Unearthed debut this year. 

Other acts included Dawn Penn, Aleighcia Scott, Da Fuchaman Tc & The Groove Family, Long Legged Creatures, Get The Blessing, Worm Soundsystem, and many more!

Henge

Henge

Henge is a British psychedelic rock band known for their unique blend of electronic and traditional instruments, sci-fi inspired lyrics, and energetic live performances. The band was formed in 2016 and consists of four members: Zpor (vocals, synthesizers), Goo (bass), Nom (drums), and Grok (guitar).Henge’s music is characterized by its otherworldly soundscapes, pulsing rhythms, and catchy melodies. 

The band draws inspiration from a wide range of musical genres, including rock, funk, electronic, and world music. Their lyrics often explore themes related to space travel, extraterrestrial life, and the mysteries of the universe. Henge has gained a reputation for their electrifying live shows, which feature elaborate costumes, multimedia projections, and audience participation. The band has performed at numerous festivals and events in the UK and Europe, including Glastonbury, Boomtown, and Shambala.

In addition to their music, Henge is also known for their activism and advocacy work. The band has been involved in various environmental and social justice campaigns, and they often use their platform to raise awareness about these issues.

Dawn Penn

Dawn Penn

Dawn Penn is a Jamaican singer known for her hit song “You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No)” which was released in 1994 and became a chart-topping success. She began her career in the 1960s and has been active in the music industry for over five decades. Penn is known for her soulful voice and her ability to blend reggae, ska, and rocksteady into her music. She has released several albums throughout her career, including “No, No, No” and “Dawn Penn Meets Mad Professor: The Best of Dawn Penn”. Her music has been influential in the development of Jamaican music and has been covered by many artists around the world.

Mad Professor 

Mad Professor

Mad Professor, whose real name is Neil Fraser, is a British electronic dub producer and musician. He is known for his innovative and experimental approach to dub music, which involves the use of electronic instruments and effects to create a unique sound.Mad Professor began his career in the 1980s, working as an engineer and producer for various reggae artists in the UK. He soon began experimenting with dub music, incorporating elements of electronic music and creating his own unique sound.

Over the years, Mad Professor has released numerous albums and collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Massive Attack, Lee “Scratch” Perry, and The Orb. He is also known for his live performances, which often involve the use of a large number of electronic instruments and effects. Mad Professor’s music is characterized by its heavy use of bass, intricate rhythms, and atmospheric soundscapes. He is known for his ability to create complex and layered tracks that are both hypnotic and engaging.
