Modern English is a renowned rock band from England, best known for their hits “I Melt with You,” “Hands Across the Sea,” and “Ink and Paper.” They split up in 1991 but made a comeback in 1995 with several new band members. The original lineup got back together in 2009 and has since been actively recording music and performing on tours.
The band, originally named The Lepers, was established in 1979 in Colchester, Essex, England by Robbie Grey (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitar, vocals), and Michael Conroy (bass, vocals). The band later expanded to include Richard Brown (drums) and Stephen Walker (keyboards), at which point they changed their name to “Modern English”.
In 1979, the band released a single on their independent label, ‘Limp’. The following year, they signed with 4AD and released two more singles. They also recorded a session for John Peel before launching their debut album, Mesh & Lace, in 1981. In its early days, the band displayed a significant Joy Division influence. A second recording session with Peel was completed in October 1981.
In 2009, the original members of Modern English reunited and began touring and creating new music. Following their reunion and extensive tours, they released “Take Me To The Trees” in 2016, marking their first new album in three decades. They had intended to embark on a worldwide tour for their 40th anniversary in 2020, but the global pandemic altered these plans. Instead, throughout 2020, Modern English performed their entire “After The Snow” album virtually online.
